Masters of the "N," I have a question...
"Milli" is a 1949 8N, no serial number on the block. 12V alternator conversion. I don't know if it is a 12V coil or not (how can I tell?)
Anyway, ...
About 8 months ago I re-did the electrical system, replaced all of the plugs and wires, points and condenser, distributor cap, wiring harness, resistor, ... Same coil.
It ran perfectly, although it would occasionally backfire when it got hot, usually from having too much golden rod fluff in the radiator.
It had set idle for about two weeks. I went to start it yesterday and it backfires almost continuously, sort of a "pop" every 3-5 seconds, sometimes a little longer, sometimes a little shorter. It also seems weak.
I opened the main jet a 1/2 turn and it did not help, so I opened it quite a bit and if it helped at all it was only a little.
I did some Googleing and read the articles at "My Ford Tractors." It seems that the problem could be a timing problem with the distributor, or it could be running lean and need a carb rebuild. Is there a good way to diagnose exactly what is wrong, or to differentiate between a timing problem and carb rebuild time?
Thanks so much for your thoughts.
