I talked to a friend of mine, Roger, who worked at a Ford Tractor dealer for 25 years until they closed in 1990, and asked him. He said the 'gauge wheel' was not needed if you had draft control. Since all Ford Tractors have draft control, the FMD Models were built to cover the non-Ford tractor market. Tractors without draft control would use these and you set the gauge wheel to the desired depth of the plow they wanted. Makes sense now.
