40 cm would be deep enough here to not freeze; or not freeze often, in the winter. The problem where I live is there are a lot of stones buried in the ground. I kept hitting some with the turn plough at the end of the back veggie garden and it turned into a major job to dig them out and I was left with a big hole to fill; what I saw on the top was like the tip of the iceberg.
