It may not have been an "economy kick" as much as the curtailing of chrome for use in non-defense applications, i.e. Korean "Police Action" 1950-53. During '51-'52 the quality of chrome on auto parts was abysmal, and more than likely filtered down to mundane items like chromed emblems on tractors.
