Brass Toggle Fuel Shutoff Valve

I have one of these valves on the '40 9N that I bought in upstate NY. While I plan to keep the tractor garaged and in restored shape I do intend to use it with a finish mower this summer. The brass fuel valve is very original and neat to have but it is turning out to be a PITA. It leaks so much that I have had to move the tractor outside under a tarp until I drain the tank and (for now) replace the valve. I do not like puddles of gas on the floor of the shop. And, it leaks worse when the tractor is running.

Has anybody been successful in rebuilding one of these things to stop the leakage? I have another one from 9N4394 that I had the same problem with and took apart. There are no O-rings in it. It apparently just depends on a brass-on-brass lapped barrel and stopcock. I never went further with that one and put it on the shelf where it is today.

No wonder Ford phased them out. Apparently they were gone by the time that the 2N came along.
