My resource book says, "...the B-17 Flying Fortress was in production at Boeing by the late thirties..." and then goes on to say that in 1939, the Army Air Corps asked Consolidated to be a second supplier to increase production. They couldn't comply their methods to Boeings methods so, instead, offered to design and build a prototype bomber that would have a new wing design, fly farther and faster with a larger bomb load than the B-17, within nine months -an unheard of feat. On December 29, 1939, one day short of nine months, the B-24 made its maiden voyage in California and fulfilled all that was promised. My wifes' father, Dale Kennedy, was a tail gunner on a B-17. He died when she was 7.
