Hi Drake, the how to's explains the chains so I will let you read the good advice from others on that. A couple of quick notes if you have never operated a brush hog before. The spinning blades create a lot of momentum making an over running clutch mandatory on your tractor. Without one the momentum will push you through a fence, into a ditch or tree etc.. Next is the front edge on that thing, the one closest to the tractor. If you will look at a mower that the state uses on the road medians and shoulders you will find a series of chains hanging down on that front edge. The reason for these is to catch rocks, sticks etc. picked up by the blades and prevent launching them at you. Your mower will bean you in the back or back of the head extremely hard if you are not very careful. I tend to run my mower as slow as I can and have sufficient power to still go through the area I am cutting. This does not give as smooth of a job on really tall or thick stuff but it does cut back on the number of items hitting me. Just something to think about.
