I tend to agree with Dave. Sounds like you have trash (rust flakes, etc.) in your gas tank. Opening the sediment bowl valve all the way, which is to be used as a reserve gallon to get you back to the barn, also lets the trash that settles around the sediment bowl filter to clog it up.
