One way to diagnose fuel starvation as your problem is to take a pint jar, remove the drain bolt from the carb's fuel bowl, and you should see a continuous, strong stream of gas that should fill the jar in a minute or so. If it doesn't, it can indicate a sticking float in the fuel bowl or clogged fuel filter screens.

If it does fill the jar pretty quickly, then I would look at the coil next. The coil on the front-mount distributor is known to be fragile and temperamental. Replacement coils from the "land of almost right" are also known to fail early. Have you replaced yours lately, or did the seller tell you that they had just tuned it?
