Recently I decided to order and install new steering sectors for my 1939 9N restoration project. I received the new sectors but found that the left hand and right hand Tisco arms did not match each other. The right hand unit was a reasonable replacement for the original, but the left was machined out too far and was a much bulkier unit and just looked (to my way of thinking) unacceptable for a restoration project.
I got hold of TISCO management and showed them photos of the units and they agreed that it was a poor match but it would take months to get the moulds redone and produce a matching set. I think they will be doing this, but for me it was too late, so I decided to just fix it myself. I decided to transplant the original Ford left hand sector arm to the TISCO sector gear. The process is illustrated in the following photos-it was a lot of work, but worth it in the end. Ironically I had been looking for a good set of used sectors and had been unable to find any, and on the same day I completed these I got an e-mail from John Smith noting he had found a really good used set. I went ahead and got those too for future use.
This shows the TISCO right hand sector in place-not too bad, a reasonable replacement for the original
The left hand TISCO sector installed, note the protruding machined surface and undercut radius of the inner arm!
This shows the left hand TISCO compared to the original Ford sector-note the lengths of the machined surfaces.
Here is the new sector gear and original Ford arm-I fabricated an internal alignment pin for mating the two pieces.
Here are the two pieces mated together and set for welding, I had also fabricated a stepped arbor to hold the sector gear for machining the chamfer and center pin bore. The arbor is tacked to the sector and will be removed upon completion of machining.
Here is the completed welded unit-the weld depth matches the machined bearing portion thickness of 1/4" and the process was time consuming with pre heating and care to maintain even cooling.
View of installed left hand sector-not bad
Another view from the side-I'm happy with the result.
