I would think that you should feel the throwout bearing engage with the fingers of the clutch plate, particularly if the disk was left out-also if there is no disk then it shouldn't grind when putting it in gear because the input shaft is not turning without a disc. I'm not sure you can get the disc in backwards, particularly without noticing it. You also should feel the spring pressure from the throwout bearing return springs. It could be the fork actuating the clutch has sheared the pin or possibly check to see if the actuating lever on the shaft outside has split and is not turning the shaft actuating the clutch-I have seen that mentioned on the board before.
