I recently went through the same experience. I just used a punch from the oil plug side and went at it. It should not require a bunch of force. The pin in mine appeared to be a roll pin with a chamfered end. On mine it did not appear to make any difference which side it was inserted or from. I did it through the oil hole because it seemed easier to get to with the punch.
