Doesn't sound like it would do any good to block it down, as in absence of any spring push-back, it isn't even touching the pressure plate fingers. I would look to correct linkage assy & adjustment. Before splitting, I would disconnect linkage from the shaft passing through the belly & pipe wrench it CCW to see if I could get the spring push-back. If not, the throughout bearing could possibly be installed incorrectly or the release fork could be slipping on the shaft or slip might be at link to shaft near pedal linkage (exterior).
