The linkage is very stiff and doesn't flex at the pinned joint at all. I'm not sure how to adjust this to prevent it from pulling the valve out when the lift control lever is placed in the lowered position.

Yes the spring is connected to the horseshoe, this has two horseshoes, the second is attached to that lower bolt in the picture.
