The one on the right is what came out of a 1951 and a 1952 distributor. The one on the left was sold recently as a late 8N side distributor replacement dust cover. The replacement does not allow the distributor cap to engage the slot in the distributor body that prevents rotation.
I'm wondering if your dust cover was an in-between version that would work correctly with the 8N distributor. The modern ones appear to rely only on the spring clamps to keep the cap from turning. They also make it darn near impossible to latch those clamps.
