That was the upgrade J-U-CM.
While allowing for easier inspection it also allowed for ventilation to alieve vapor build up from the operation of the mechanism contained there in.
Or it could be a machine that had a Sherman trans in it at one time.
Personally I like the "Jay - U C M" upgrade.
