You are very fortunate in having the original CM Hall headlights. I just wonder if you know the value of them. In the condition yours are in, they are worth perhaps $500. I saw a set sold at auction a month ago that went for just over $400. I know tht you made a comment about the "Originality Police". Frankly, if the tractor is going to work at all I would put the headlights away in a very safe place and install a replica set of Tract-O-Lites, which were the standard headlight from about 1942 on.
Yes, the generators on your '40 and your 2N are reversed. The tensioning bracket came out around 1/1/45. New production tractors had a slightly revised generator with two holes for a bolted on generator bracket. The band type bracket was released as a retrofit kit for earlier tractors.
