The trick is finding an alternator with an internal voltage regulator. The 2003 article, as I recall (and it is really hazy in my mind) said that the Nippon Denso alternators in older Nissans were internally regulated. You might ask somebody who works a lot on older Japanese cars. You can always use an alternator with an external voltage regulator (example: Ford) but it is more hassle.
