raven, you are correct in that the FO-4, pg 52, "Motors Smoothly, states Polarize field poles by momentary contacting generator FIELD terminal with battery lead, to eliminate the possibility that field polarity was reverse during test", is incorrect for 8N generators (Type-A) but is correct for NAA (Type-B) generators.
Now, to really muddy the waters in some minds AND really clear the water in other minds, I am here to tell you that the SAME procedure is perfectly good for either Type-A or Type-B, and that is to jumper BATT to ARM. This is for an installed generator & voltage regulator, properly connected. Generator alone on the bench is a different matter.

The "classic" polarization method is as shown in the attached drawing:
But, why mess your mind with which to use & on which gen, when you can do one size fits all? No doubt, there will be those who can't separate themselves from "what they have always heard", but if you have a half hour, I can show technically/physically why this 'one size fits all' procedure works AND can demonstrate it with actual generator/VR sets as well AND have done it many times.
