Thanks to everyone for your input. In researching this subject I have found that every manufacture of four cylinder engines has their own reasons for their recommended dwell setting but they don't share the logic they used in determining the best dwell.
I guess it is safe to say that the optimum dwell is someplace between 20° and 90°. Some of you may want to comment on the validity of the reasoning (not the person) in the below link.
