Jon,the "big" alternators hanging out the side do look undersireable I agree.A few months back I found a really small Nippon Denzo Alternator,65 amps. and installed it just so I could say I had a 12volt 9N.I got the idea out of the N Newsletter dated april 8,2003.The writter gives pics and diagrams of the setup.Now this alternator is,,,small ! And one who trys to keep things original I was reluctant to do it but,,,golly it's nice and easy on the looks.
