I will insert answers to your questions within you text in brackets {}.
I do have a few questions on this. First is it necessary to polarize at the voltage regulator or cut out{no}, will any application of correct voltage polarization to the generator do the job{yes}, for example on the early armature pole only generator (single wire) can you just ground the generator body to the positive terminal of a battery on the bench and touch a jumper between the negative terminal on the battery and the armature terminal and get the job done before installing the generator{yes}, can one just use any source, even a dry cell battery to accomplish polarization{yes}? How long does residual polarization last? (At least a decade, based on old used generators I have kept on shelves} I ask on this because I am planning on using a solid state cut-out on my 39 9N that Just 8N's and Dennis Carpenter sells. This is not just a standard cut out and the instructions indicate on this item that under no circumstances polarize the gen by jumping the terminals of this "cut-out" or it will ruin the unit. Now that I am closing in on hooking everything up I lie awake at night worrying about it.
Additionally, what is the mechanism that causes generators to take on the opposite polarization when that happens?{someone polarized it in that opposite direction intentionally or accidentally by installing a battery backwards & starting the engine & cut out closed & battery overpowered generator}
If it is just a case of attaching the battery backwards, then installing the battery correctly should lead to correct polarization {no, because the simple installation of battery does not connect anything to the generator} {as mentioned above, starting it may set polarization right, it may also destroy the cut out}, but as JMOR points out that is not sufficient. Then finally,what is the voltage regulator involvement-does it also have a ckt that requires polarization {it does not}(I see occasional references to regulator polarization)or is it just the convenient proximity of the terminal points for jumpering? {convenient proximity is correct}
