Well it appears polarization is really a hot topic here on the N Board, Tim Daley should do an analysis on most popular subjects and I would guess this one would be near the top.
I do have a few questions on this. First is it necessary to polarize at the voltage regulator or cut out, will any application of correct voltage polarization to the generator do the job, for example on the early armature pole only generator (single wire) can you just ground the generator body to the positive terminal of a battery on the bench and touch a jumper between the negative terminal on the battery and the armature terminal and get the job done before installing the generator, can one just use any source, even a dry cell battery to accomplish polarization? How long does residual polarization last? I ask on this because I am planning on using a solid state cut-out on my 39 9N that Just 8N's and Dennis Carpenter sells. This is not just a standard cut out and the instructions indicate on this item that under no circumstances polarize the gen by jumping the terminals of this "cut-out" or it will ruin the unit. Now that I am closing in on hooking everything up I lie awake at night worrying about it.
Additionally, what is the mechanism that causes generators to take on the opposite polarization when that happens? If it is just a case of attaching the battery backwards, then installing the battery correctly should lead to correct polarization, but as JAMOR points out that is not sufficient. Then finally, what is the voltage regulator involvement-does it also have a ckt that requires polarization (I see occasional references to regulator polarization)or is it just the convenient proximity of the terminal points for jumpering?
