I was was not asking for any help, but entered the topic as a contributor in an open discussion on polarization that became a spin off topic from the orginal question, if the field terminal and ground terminal on the 6 volt generator where suppose to be grounded ( low resistance)to the case.

Polarization
If you aren't sure if your generator needs to be polarized, it won't hurt to try as long as the proper method is used. The only harm that could come is if you use the wrong procedure. Please note that some brands of regulators will have the label GEN (Generator) instead of ARM (Armature), but it is the same thing with a different name.

Any posulated polarization procedure needs to be validated. Just because you read on the internet does not mean it is valid.

my own research on the subject of polarization on dc generator circuits on Ford vechicles is problamatic. The first thing to establish is if the circuit has an external or internal grounded field coil winding. In order to this the brush cap on the generator must be removed. if the field terminal to generator case is open then the generator has an externally grounded field coil winding. If the field terminal to generator case has a few ohms between 1.5 to 4 then the generator has an internally grounded field coil winding. The brush cap needs to be removed becuse the field winding shorts out through the armature brush to generator case giving a false measurement.

After the type of field grounding is established refer to the diagram furnished by by JMOR in this thread to determine the proper momentary jumper procedure.

If the incorrect polarization procedure is used the generator armature can even melt
and also melt the voltage regulator after the generator starts generating voltage.

The polarization procedure is totally missing in the FORD FO-4 shop manual for 9,2,8N tractors. The sentence at the bottom of page 52 that eludes to polarization I believe to be false and is inconsistant with the JMOR jumper diagram.
I do know that later models of FORD used the internal grounded field coil where the field wire is jumped to the battery for polarization.
