Understand
Checked out "Tractor data.com" , apparently the generator was used from day one, 1939 to 1970 with the introduction of the alternator.
The A type ,internal sourced field , with the armature generating the current for the field coil is used in tractors from 1939 to 1952.
The B type with external sourced field coil with current supplied from the battery
is used in the NAA from 53 to 54 ,which is within the scope of the N tractor club.
Believe the N series includes the NAA, but not the number series starting with model 640
Believe both A (two and three brush) & B type are shut type generators, as opposed to series wound or compound wound generators ,where the field coil is wired in parallel with the armature.
Does the B type require any polarization, if the battery is disconnected.
The A type does require polarization by shorting the field terminal to the hot side
of the battery terminal, if the battery is disconnected, because if the current in the field coil and armature could end up in opposite directions and the generator would have no voltage output.
This is all good stuff.
Almost temped to remove all the charging hardward including the generator (replace with an idler pulley to tension the fan belt) and start & run on a fully charged battery and use a good Deltran Battery charger/maintainer.
6 volt Optima battery is good for 50 Ah, good for 8 hours operating time.
